Mozart's piano sonatas have been part of every piano player's repertoire for more than 200 years. Research over the last few decades has, however, led to a more precise dating and classification of the works. Source studies now show that some printed editions from the 18th century are of greater value as sources than Mozart's own writing; many works were prepared for printing by the composer himself and provided with precise performance instructions on dynamics and articulation. He paid particular attention to the slow movements, which are often richly decorated in the printed editions. All of this, and the sources that have become accessible again, are reason enough to reissue Mozart's sonatas in the Vienna Urtext Edition. After the Fantasy and Sonata in C minor, which are already available as individual editions, the second volume now follows, which includes the sonatas KV 330 to KV 576. Also included is the two-movement sonata KV 547a, which elsewhere, if at all, leads an undeserved shadowy existence among piano pieces. In the new edition, the slow movements of the sonatas KV 332 and 457 are placed side by side for the first time in their original and decorated form. The performance advice of the renowned Mozart expert Robert D. Levin provides new impulses for an often overly established Mozart interpretation.
