This collection of etudes from 1826 is not only Franz Liszt's most important early work, but also the precursor version of the "Etudes d'execution transcendante" (UT 50233), which provides insightful insights into Liszt's pianistic and compositional development. The etudes, each of which is devoted to a specific technical problem, allow advanced students (from intermediate level) to get started with Liszt's work and at the same time prove to be an excellent alternative to the more demanding etudes by Carl Czerny. This new edition uses the French first edition and excerpts from the autographs as the main source for the first time, but not the German reprints not authorized by Liszt. This allows numerous errors in the musical text, articulation and dynamics to be corrected. The interpretation notes provide background information on the young Liszt as a teacher and the use of etudes in his teaching.
